How to Stream .mkv files onto PS3

As some of you will be aware, I have previously blogged about my PS3 and linking my PS3 wirelessly to my laptop.I was having problems linking via Windows Media Player, and personally dont really like Media Player. So instead I stalled a program called PS3 Media server (http://ps3mediaserver.blogspot.com) onto my laptop and was connecting through that.
For those who are unaware of this program, PS3 Media Server is a very simple program that runs in the background of your main computer/laptop that then allows you to browse your entire computers hard drive through the PS3. I have been running this program for a month or so and am very happy with it, but did have a few issues when streaming bluray files (.mkv) They just dont want to stream. The file loads then judders and cuts out and just generally wont work properly.
So as a work-around I had to install a program called mkv2vob. This is a software for converting .MKV or .TS video files into Sony PlayStation 3 compatible format. Files with compatible content streams are remixed without transcoding, so the process is very quick and there is no quality loss.
It does work and you can then stream the file it creates. The only downside is that you have to create a duplicate file on your hard drive in the new format that then streams, taking up space. It also takes time to convert all the files and is just a bit of a pain in the arse.
Well, over the weekend I have upgraded my operating system from Vista to WIndows 7 and reinstalled all my software back on. Didnt expect this to make any difference to connecting it to my PS3 until lastnight.
I was showing my friends the PS3 and movie streaming from my laptop and started showing them the difference between the streamed converted mkv2vob file and the mkv file. But to my surprise there was no diffence, the mkv file streamed perfectly. No jumping, no pausing, the movie just played in HD perfectly. I was so unsure that I tested out a number of mkv files and they all seem to stream without any problems.
It seems that Windows 7 has come trumps once again, allowing me to stream mkv files smoothly onto my PS3 where Vista Failed. I have no idea why this has happened, I have my suspicians and will be researching to find out more. I shall keep you updated.
